History of the CR-V
While Honda released the CR-V in Japan in the mid-1990s, the SUV didn't make its stateside debut until 1997. Although the CR-V could have crossed the Pacific much earlier, the Passport had just hit American roadways, and Honda decided to give it a head start before following up with another new vehicle.
The early CR-V was available with one trim, drawing some slight but noticeable inspiration from the much older Honda Civic. The original model was powered by a 2.0-liter engine that put out 126 horsepower with a four-speed automatic transmission and optional Real-Time four-wheel drive. An additional trim was available by 1999, offering 146 horsepower. The CR-V entered its second generation in 2006, receiving additional interior space, added comfort features, and other updates. In 2017, Honda unveiled the third generation, now with a refreshed interior, redesigned exterior, even more cabin space, and leading-edge technology.
